Welcome to the website of IM Yochanan Afek
Saturday April 16 2011 I celebrated one of my most enjoyable and original birthdays in
Haarlem as the final stage of the Chesscool solving contest was dedicated to me
and took place on that very day. I was even invited to contribute an original study for
that matter which I display in the enclosed video. My ‘assistent’ is my young friend (and
pupil) FM David Klein who is himself a great study lover. David and his family kindly turned
this day to a special experience for me. My old friend Karel van Delft was most helpful in
documenting the event in writing and filming so I can share with you this precious souvenir.

Why some moves are so difficult to find?
New In Chess published the English translation of the book I wrote with Emmanuel Neiman.
See for a preview.
See also for reviews of the book Johan Hut’s column and Antonio Gude in Revue Chess.
Also GM Lubomir Kavalek refers to our book in his article ‘Pitching a perfect chess game’.
A photo of me by Gerd Densing (a German friend) taken in Vlissingen.
In the background is the Israeli GM Evgeny Postny.
